We asked our Head of Digital & Tech Recruitment, Joe Misseldine a bit about his role at Stonor, find out what he said below!
Tell us a bit about your role as Head of Digital Talent at Stonor?
I have more of a focus on filling digital marketing led roles, covering all things content, paid media, Strategy, SEO, CRM, social and everything in between. I am really lucky to work with such a variety of companies from funded start-ups to corporations as well as an extensive agency side recruitment. I have strong experience in retail/eCommerce, high growth tech start-ups, digital agency services and travel. Most of the roles I help to fill are for senior digital specialists where the skill sets are so in-demand that headhunting is required.
What did you do prior to being at Stonor?
This is my second stint working at Stonor! After working in a marketing agency as a junior, I joined Stonor to train as a recruiter and spent 3.5 years here. I always had the desire to spend some time working in London so I joined a specialist digital recruitment agency. I spent three years learning all about the digital ecosystem and had a very successful time helping some of the hottest start ups and household brand names with their digital recruitment hires. When I decided to leave London, I set up a digital division with my old friends at Stonor which has proved to be a great decision for me. Despite the Covid challenges we are busier than ever!
What are the biggest trends you’ve seen in your industry over the last year?
Digital changes most weeks, let alone each year, that’s why I enjoy working in it so much. There were many changing trends in the last year, such as the huge prominence of video, changing social media landscapes & demographics, programmatic entering the realms of traditional media, but I would say content has seen the most notable. There has never been more emphasis on context and targeting. Google has developed a deeper, more sophisticated understanding of online content, so marketers must think carefully about their target market and how they can tailor and write content more precisely moving forward.
What are your candidates biggest priorities when choosing their next role?
The vast majority of my candidates have put two priorities above anything else aside from remuneration. Firstly, remote working. Perhaps the only positive to come out of the COVID pandemic is that it has completely shifted employers attitudes towards remote working. In fact, all of my clients have said that if anything, productivity has increased and they will be looking at a permanent remote working policy which is music to job seekers ears. Companies that will require staff in the office for five days a week post-covid will be at a disadvantage in the talent market. Secondly, the commitment to training and development. More then ever, candidates are asking about a comprehensive overview of the training and development structure that enables them to advance their careers.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Good relationships. I count myself really lucky to have made many friends in my career with candidates I have placed and directors I have been able to help.
What would your advice be to candidates looking to progress their career within Tech/Digital?
Set time aside to learn. The more successful candidates I have worked with have not just relied on training from their employers. New technology, trends and working methods are introduced successfully all the time, so read digital blogs such as eConsultancy, sign up to online courses and gain new certifications, watch webinars with respected digital leaders, go to meet ups (post-covid) and immerse yourself in the digital ecosystem, it changes too quickly to stand still!
